The board cleared “forever prisoner” Shawqi Awad Balzuhair, 34, on Monday (11/07/2016).
Balzuhair wants to start a new life after Guantanamo. An unnamed U.S. military officer told the panel, “He knows that he will have to work hard and he is willing to do so, with the help of his family and the active goals he is striving towards such as learning new skills.”
It is however unlikely that he will be able to resettle in Yemen, as it is ravaged by war. Balzuhair will most likely require a third-country resettlement.
